The customs office is the local authority of the Federal Customs Administration. Overarching authority is the respective Hauptzollamt (HZA). In addition to the customs offices still exist customs investigation offices.
There are basically two types of customs offices. Inland customs offices on the economic territory and border customs offices are located at the external borders of the European Community. In fact, there are in Germany border customs offices only on the border with Switzerland, the airports and ports.

A customs office is basically divided into the different areas of import and export clearance. It takes under the import clearance, among other things, the tasks related to the
· Control of cross-border private and commercial goods
· Goods acquisition, including determining whether any imported goods are properly recorded
· Temporary storage asked Goods
· Acceptance and examination of the customs declaration
· Calculation of import duties and their entry in the accounts
· Release of the goods for customs declaration procedures
· Securing and confiscation of goods if transfer is not allowed (eg import bans) or will not use them.
· Monitoring of postal items that are brought into the territory of the European Union.

Export side, all measures are perceived to
· Provision for export
· Export monitoring
· Exhibition of preference securities.
